Indiana PE and architect license renewal: what firms need to track

If your firm has engineers or architects licensed in Indiana, you track three kinds of dates: each person’s license expiration, the end of each person’s CE period, and the firm’s own registration. Engineers answer to the Indiana State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. Architects answer to the Indiana Board of Registration for Architects and Landscape Architects (staffed by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency).

PE license renewal in Indiana

PE licenses expire July 31 of even-numbered years and renew every two years. The next deadline in our data is July 31, 2028.

The board: Indiana State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. Look up each engineer’s current expiration date on the board’s license lookup rather than trusting the date on an old spreadsheet.

License numbers: "PE" + 8 digits (year-based). Keep all 8 digits. This is how SealBench reads the numbers on an imported roster; it isn’t a board rule.

PE continuing education (PDH)

• Hours: 30 PDH every two years. Fixed statewide biennium from August 1 of an even-numbered year to July 31 of the next even-numbered year. PE registrations renew at the end of each biennium (July 31 of even years).
• Ethics: At least 1 hour in ethics applicable to the practice of professional engineering, each biennium.
• The state’s laws and rules: At least 1 hour in Indiana statutes and rules applicable to the practice of professional engineering, each biennium.
• Limits on some activities: educational outreach (at most 2), professional society service (at most 2) and papers and publications (at most 10) hours.
• Carryover: Up to 15 hours earned beyond the requirement in one biennium may carry to the next biennium.
• New licensees: Partial, not a full exemption. A PE first licensed in Indiana in the first year of a biennium owes 15 hours for that biennium. A PE first licensed in the second year of a biennium owes none.
• Records: Keep copies of certificates of completion for 3 years after the end of the biennium.
• Reporting: Licensee signs the renewal form verifying the CE requirement is met. The board conducts random audits under IC 25-1-4-3.

Architect license renewal and CE in Indiana

The architect rules on this page come from our rule tables and haven’t been checked against the architecture board’s rules yet. Check with the board before you rely on them.

Individual licenses renew every two years and expire December 31 of odd-numbered years. No firm renewal because there is no firm registration. The board: Indiana Board of Registration for Architects and Landscape Architects (staffed by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency); each architect’s date is on the license lookup.

• Hours: 24 hours every two years, at least 16 in health, safety and welfare (HSW) topics. Two-year licensure period ending December 31 of odd-numbered years
• Limits on some activities: self-directed study (at most 8) hours.
• Carryover: Rule title 'No carry over to next license period' (804 IAC 1.1-8-9).
• New licensees: First-time registrants do not need CE at the first renewal (804 IAC 1.1-8-4).
• Records: Keep certificates of completion for 3 years after the end of the licensing period (804 IAC 1.1-8-8).
• Units: An AIA learning unit (LU) is one hour.

Firm registration (COA) and qualifier rules

Engineering firms

Our data shows no separate firm authorization from the Indiana engineering board. Indiana does not appear to register engineering firms with the board. Instead, IC 25-31-1-18 (corporate practice) says a business may practice engineering only under the responsible direction of a registered PE who is a full-time employee. Corporations and LLCs still register with the Secretary of State. No officer, ownership or replacement deadline was found.

Architecture firms

Our data shows no separate architecture firm registration in Indiana. Indiana has no firm registration or certificate of authorization for architecture. IC 25-4-1-27 says a firm, partnership or corporation may practice only if the work is under the full authority and responsible charge of a registrant who is a principal of the firm or an officer of the corporation. That registrant's name must appear whenever the firm name is used in practice. No ownership percentage rule was found. No change-notice or replacement deadline was found. IC 25-4-1-11 says the architect chapter does not apply to registered professional engineers or engineering firms.

Architect in charge: Work of a firm, partnership or corporation must be under the full authority and responsible charge of a registrant who is a principal of the firm or an officer of the corporation; that registrant's name must appear with the firm name (IC 25-4-1-27).

Firms that offer both

No architecture firm registration exists. Architects and engineers have separate boards. Whether an A/E firm needs an engineering firm certificate is an engineering-board question, not covered here.

Who can seal drawings in Indiana

Indiana issues a PE license without limiting it by discipline; engineers seal only work within their competence, which your firm judges. No separate structural engineer license was found in Indiana's engineering licensing materials (not yet confirmed).

On architectural sheets, our data says an engineer may seal some architectural work. IC 25-4-1-11 says the architect chapter does not apply to or affect registered professional engineers or engineering firms, though an engineer may not use the title 'architect'. IC 25-4-1-29 lets plans for covered buildings be prepared by a registered architect or a registered professional engineer, and exempts building types that the Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission exempts from design-professional certification. Exact small-building thresholds were not confirmed here.

Before a set goes out, every sheet has to pass four checks: a Indiana license, the right discipline, a license still active on the issue date, and the firm’s registration. Compare Indiana with other states on who can seal drawings, by state.

Common mistakes

• Having enough hours but not the required topic. A Indiana PE needs at least 1 hour in ethics and at least 1 hour in the state’s laws and rules. Extra general hours don’t make up for a missing topic.
