Massachusetts PE and architect license renewal: what firms need to track

Engineers: the Massachusetts PE license renewal and CE page has the next deadline, every CE rule with its source, and what changed recently.

If your firm has engineers or architects licensed in Massachusetts, you track three kinds of dates: each person’s license expiration, the end of each person’s CE period, and the firm’s own registration. Engineers answer to the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Architects answer to the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects (Division of Occupational Licensure). Worth knowing up front: Massachusetts is one of the few places with no PDH hours for PE renewal, so the engineering side is mostly about dates.

PE license renewal in Massachusetts

All PE licenses renew every two years on June 30 of even-numbered years. The next deadline in our data is June 30, 2028.

The board: Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Look up each engineer’s current expiration date on the board’s license lookup rather than trusting the date on an old spreadsheet.

PE continuing education (PDH)

• Hours: No PDH hours are required to renew a PE license.
• New licensees: Not applicable: Massachusetts has no PE CE requirement in the current 250 CMR, so every renewal owes no CE hours (not yet confirmed).
• Records: Not applicable: no CE record requirement found.
• Reporting: No CE reporting or audit. Renewal requires proof of compliance with tax and other statutory requirements and 250 CMR 5.09 (disclosure of discipline and convictions).

Architect license renewal and CE in Massachusetts

The architect rules on this page come from our rule tables and haven’t been checked against the architecture board’s rules yet. Check with the board before you rely on them.

Individual registration expires August 31 every year and is renewed annually, with a CE attestation. The board: Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects (Division of Occupational Licensure); each architect’s date is on the license lookup.

• Hours: 12 hours every year, all in health, safety and welfare (HSW) topics. Rule text says each calendar year; the board FAQ says the 12-month renewal cycle September 1 to August 31.
• Carryover: Excess hours may not be credited to a future year (231 CMR 3.06).
• New licensees: No first-renewal exemption found in 231 CMR 3.06. Exemptions exist for military service, illness/disability, emergency, Architect Emeritus, and meeting CE in another jurisdiction.
• Records: 231 CMR 3.06: six years from the date of award. Board FAQ (older) says at least two full registration periods.
• Units: An AIA learning unit (LU) is one hour.

Firm registration (COA) and qualifier rules

Engineering firms

Our data shows no separate firm authorization from the Massachusetts engineering board. Massachusetts does not register engineering firms. A firm, partnership or corporation may practice engineering if the person in charge of that practice is a Massachusetts-registered PE (M.G.L. c.112 §81R(f)). No full-time, officer or replacement deadline rule was found (not yet confirmed).

Architecture firms

Our data shows no separate architecture firm registration in Massachusetts. The Architects Board issues no firm certificate. A corporation may offer architecture only if at least one officer (set by articles or by-laws) is a Massachusetts registered architect. Partnerships, LLCs and LLPs need at least one partner, manager or member who is a Massachusetts architect. That architect signs the contracts and keeps responsible control of the work. LLCs and LLPs must carry professional liability insurance or a capital fund. NCARB says firms register with the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Each architect lists every Business Enterprise they practice with at renewal. Buildings under 35,000 cubic feet of enclosed space are exempt from the architect statute.

Ownership: No ownership percentage. At least one officer (corporation), partner (partnership/LLP), or manager/member (LLC) must be a Massachusetts registered architect.

Architect in charge: The registered architect officer/partner/manager must execute all architectural contracts and have responsible control of all architectural work of the entity.

Firms that offer both

Architects and engineers have separate Massachusetts boards. Neither board issues a firm certificate for architecture, so there is no combined A/E registration. An A/E entity would need a registered architect officer for architecture (231 CMR 4.04) and would separately meet the engineering board's entity rules.

Who can seal drawings in Massachusetts

Massachusetts issues a PE license without limiting it by discipline; engineers seal only work within their competence, which your firm judges. Massachusetts registers PEs by discipline (license types by branch), but its practice rule limits engineers to their areas of competence; no separate SE practice requirement was confirmed (not yet confirmed).

On architectural sheets, our data says an engineer may seal architectural work only in limited cases. M.G.L. c.112 s.60L lets a registered professional engineer perform architectural services incidental to his engineering work. The same section exempts plans and supervision for any building of less than 35,000 cubic feet of enclosed space from the architect statute. The state building code (780 CMR 107.6) separately requires a registered design professional for construction control.

Before a set goes out, every sheet has to pass four checks: a Massachusetts license, the right discipline, a license still active on the issue date, and the firm’s registration. Compare Massachusetts with other states on who can seal drawings, by state.
