North Carolina PE license renewal and CE requirements

Renewal cycle and late renewal

Individual PE licenses renew every year and expire December 31; firm licenses renew every year and expire June 30. Checked against G.S. 89C-17, September 27, 2026

Look up each engineer’s current expiration date on the board’s license lookup rather than trusting an old spreadsheet. Our tables don’t record North Carolina’s late-renewal or reinstatement rules, so check them with the board before a date passes.

Continuing education (PDH)

• Hours: 15 PDH every year. Annual. Every individual PE license expires on December 31 each year (G.S. 89C-17), and the 15 PDH are owed for that annual renewal period. The statute lets renewal be completed during the month after expiry (January). Checked against 21 NCAC 56 .1703, September 27, 2026
• Ethics: At least 1 PDH in Ethics or Rules of Professional Conduct, every renewal, starting with the 2024 renewal. The rule defines this topic broadly (ethics, codes of conduct, standards of practice or care, project and risk management). • Limits on some activities: educational outreach (at most 3) hours.
• Carryover: Up to 15 PDH above the annual requirement may carry forward into the next renewal period (21 NCAC 56 .1703). Checked against 21 NCAC 56 .1703, September 27, 2026
• New licensees: Exempt for the first renewal period. New licensees by examination or by comity are both exempt (21 NCAC 56 .1707(1)). Checked against 21 NCAC 56 .1707(1), September 27, 2026
• Reporting: The licensee reports and certifies CE compliance on the renewal form (21 NCAC 56 .0505(a), .1711). No proof is sent with renewal. The board audits by random selection or on information it receives (.1712). Checked against 21 NCAC 56 .1711, .1712(a), September 27, 2026

Firm rule

A firm offering engineering in North Carolina needs its own credential from the board: firm license (certificate of licensure for a business: PC, PLLC, business firm or Chapter 87 corporation). Corporations, LLCs, partnerships and business firms need a firm license (certificate of licensure); a sole proprietor practicing in the licensee's own name as shown in Board records is exempt. Each NC office must have a resident PE in responsible charge who spends a majority of normal working time there (not less than a majority of business hours), and a PE can be resident at only one firm unless they own a third of each.
