Wyoming PE and architect license renewal: what firms need to track

If your firm has engineers or architects licensed in Wyoming, you track three kinds of dates: each person’s license expiration, the end of each person’s CE period, and the firm’s own registration. Engineers answer to the Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. Architects answer to the Wyoming State Board of Architects and Landscape Architects.

PE license renewal in Wyoming

Licenses and business registrations renew every two years and expire December 31 of the renewal year; the first renewal is due December 31 of the year after issue, so the year is staggered.

The board: Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. Look up each engineer’s current expiration date on the board’s license lookup rather than trusting the date on an old spreadsheet.

License numbers: Digits; "PE 12345". This is how SealBench reads the numbers on an imported roster; it isn’t a board rule.

PE continuing education (PDH)

• Hours: 30 PDH every two years. Biennial renewal on a staggered basis; licenses expire December 31 of the renewal year, and the first renewal is due December 31 of the year after issue (W.S. 33-29-501(a); Rules ch. 4 s. 1(a), 2(a), 5(a)). The rules do not state the CPC counting window outright; the NCEES-standard option counts the current and previous calendar year (ch. 4 s. 2(e)) (not yet confirmed).
• Limits on some activities: self-directed study (at most 2) and educational outreach (at most 4) hours.
• Carryover: Up to 15 CPCs may carry into the next renewal period; initial licensees may also carry over, up to 15 (Rules ch. 4 s. 2(c), 2(l)(i)).
• New licensees: Exempt on the initial renewal: "Applicants submitting an initial renewal shall be exempt from the CPC requirement" (Rules ch. 4 s. 2(a); also 2(l)(i)). The initial renewal is due December 31 of the year after issue.
• Records: 3 years (Rules ch. 4 s. 2(j)).
• Reporting: The renewal application must include verification of completion of 30 CPCs (Rules ch. 4 s. 1(b)(iii)). Every application is subject to audit; the CPC Audit Committee reviews documentation and issues deficiency notices with 60 days to cure (ch. 4 s. 2(k)). Out-of-state residents may instead show they met another jurisdiction's CPC rule of at least 15 per year or 30 per biennium (ch. 4 s. 4(a)(i)).

Architect license renewal and CE in Wyoming

The architect rules on this page come from our rule tables and haven’t been checked against the architecture board’s rules yet. Check with the board before you rely on them.

Individual license renews every 2 years and expires December 31. The first expiry is December 31 of the year after issue, so some licensees are on odd years and some on even. No late renewal; an expired license must be reissued within 3 years. No firm registration. The board: Wyoming State Board of Architects and Landscape Architects; each architect’s date is on the license lookup.

• Hours: 24 hours every two years, all in health, safety and welfare (HSW) topics. The 24 months before the license expiration date (December 31).
• Limits on some activities: papers and publications (at most 8) hours.
• Carryover: No carryover (Rules Ch. 8 Sec. 2(c)).
• New licensees: Exempt if the license was first issued by examination within 24 months before expiry (Ch. 8 Sec. 7(ii)). Others who held a WY license less than 24 months owe a prorated number of hours (Ch. 8 Sec. 2). Statute lets the board waive CE for the first renewal (W.S. 33-4-107).
• Records: At least 2 years after the renewal period in which the course was applied (Ch. 8 Sec. 5(d)).
• Units: An AIA learning unit (LU) is one hour.

Firm registration (COA) and qualifier rules

Engineering firms

A firm offering engineering in Wyoming needs a firm credential from the board: Business entity registration. Any business entity (corporation, LLC, partnership or other form, except a sole proprietorship) offering engineering must register with the board (W.S. 33-29-201, 33-29-602; Rules ch. 5 s. 5). It must name the licensee in charge of its professional activities in the state and list all offices; a change in the responsible licensee must be filed within 30 days. No full-time, officer or residency rule was found (not yet confirmed: that the licensee in charge must hold a Wyoming license).

Architecture firms

Our data shows no separate architecture firm registration in Wyoming. Wyoming licenses only individuals; there is no firm registration with the board (board FAQ). Businesses register with the Secretary of State only. No ownership or responsible-architect rule for firms was found. Anyone may design private residences, farm buildings, non-structural alterations, and garages, commercial, industrial, office, pre-engineered metal, farm-product and warehouse buildings up to 2 stories (plus a 1-story basement) designed for no more than 10 occupants (W.S. 33-4-117). All other architectural plans require a Wyoming architect (33-4-112).

Firms that offer both

Architect board has no firm registration. Engineers are regulated separately under W.S. 33-29 by the PE/PLS board; whether an A/E firm needs an engineering firm permit there was not checked here.

Who can seal drawings in Wyoming

Wyoming issues a PE license without limiting it by discipline; engineers seal only work within their competence, which your firm judges. Wyoming has no separate structural engineer license; the NCEES SE exam counts as the PE exam.

On architectural sheets, our data says an engineer may seal architectural work only in limited cases. Architectural plans for non-exempt buildings require a Wyoming architect (W.S. 33-4-112). A PE may be employed independently for civil, structural, mechanical or electrical engineering on any building (33-4-117(b)(iii)); the act does not curtail other professions. Broad exemptions let anyone design residences, farm buildings, and commercial/industrial/office/warehouse buildings up to 2 stories for 10 or fewer occupants.

Before a set goes out, every sheet has to pass four checks: a Wyoming license, the right discipline, a license still active on the issue date, and the firm’s registration. Compare Wyoming with other states on who can seal drawings, by state.

Common mistakes

• Treating an engineer’s license as the firm’s. A licensed PE can’t make up for a missing business entity registration. In Wyoming the firm needs its own before it offers engineering, and the four sheet checks fail without it.
• Losing the firm’s qualifying engineer without noticing. If the person the firm’s registration depends on leaves, the registration can be at risk. Our data doesn’t record a replacement deadline for Wyoming, so ask the board. See what to do the day someone gives notice.
