Utah PE and architect license renewal: what firms need to track

Last checked Sep 28, 2026. Not yet confirmed with the Utah boards. Confirm anything you act on with the board. Not legal advice.

Quick answer

  • Engineers (PE): PE and SE licenses renew on a two-year cycle and expire March 31 of odd-numbered years. CE: 30 PDH every two years.
  • Architects (Licensed Architect), not yet checked with the board: Individual license renews every two years and expires May 31 of even-numbered years. CE: 24 hours every two years, all of them in health, safety and welfare (HSW) topics.
  • Engineering firms: The data we hold shows no separate firm authorization from the engineering board.
  • Architecture firms: The data we hold shows no separate architecture firm registration.

If your firm has engineers or architects licensed in Utah, you track three kinds of dates: each person’s license expiration, the end of each person’s CE period, and the firm’s own registration. Engineers answer to the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors Licensing Board. Architects answer to the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), Architect Licensing Board. Worth knowing up front: architect CE runs on its own period, not the license term; some structural work needs a structural engineer license.

PE license renewal in Utah

PE and SE licenses renew on a two-year cycle and expire March 31 of odd-numbered years. The next deadline in our data is March 31, 2027.

The board: Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors Licensing Board. Look up each engineer’s current expiration date on the board’s license lookup rather than trusting the date on an old spreadsheet.

License numbers: DOPL number + "-2202" (PE classification). Seals often drop the suffix. This is how SealBench reads the numbers on an imported roster; it isn’t a board rule.

Architect license renewal and CE in Utah

The architect rules on this page come from our rule tables and haven’t been checked against the architecture board’s rules yet. Check with the board before you rely on them.

Individual license renews every two years and expires May 31 of even-numbered years. No firm renewal. The board: Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), Architect Licensing Board; each architect’s date is on the license lookup.

Firm registration (COA) and qualifier rules

Engineering firms

Our data shows no separate firm authorization from the Utah engineering board. Utah issues no firm license or certificate of authorization for engineering. An organization may practice if it employs a principal (a licensed PE or SE in responsible charge of its engineering practice) and everyone doing engineering is licensed or exempt (Utah Code 58-22-305(1)(g), 58-22-102(7)). No full-time, officer, residency or replacement-days rule appears in the statute The statute's definition of principal does not say outright that the license must be a Utah license (not yet confirmed).

Architecture firms

Our data shows no separate architecture firm registration in Utah. Utah has no firm license for architecture. The DOPL FAQ says a firm must employ a Utah-licensed architect in a principal position. The firm also registers with the Division of Corporations. Under the statute, an organization may practice if it employs a principal and all its people practicing architecture are licensed or exempt (Utah Code 58-3a-304(1)(f)). A 'principal' is a licensed architect in responsible charge of the organization's architectural practice (58-3a-102). No change-notice or replacement deadline was found.

Architect in charge: The organization must employ a 'principal': a licensed architect in responsible charge of its architectural practice. Everyone in the organization who practices architecture must be licensed or exempt (Utah Code 58-3a-102, 58-3a-304(1)(f)).

Firms that offer both

Utah has no firm registration for architecture. Architects and engineers are licensed under separate acts (58-3a and 58-22) with separate boards under DOPL.

Who can seal drawings in Utah

Utah issues a PE license without limiting it by discipline; engineers seal only work within their competence, which your firm judges. A PE may not practice structural engineering on significant structures (large assembly, schools, essential facilities, 5+ stories, over 60 ft roof height, over 200,000 sq ft); those require a Utah SE license.

On architectural sheets, our data says an engineer may seal architectural work only in limited cases. A licensed PE may do engineering and 'incidental architectural acts' within the PE's education and training (58-3a-304(1)(c)). Final building plans need an architect's seal except as allowed by 58-3a-304, the PE Act or the construction code (58-3a-602). No license is needed for one- and two-family homes and townhouses. None is needed for non-structural alterations of existing buildings up to 3,000 sq ft.

Before a set goes out, every sheet has to pass four checks: a Utah license, the right discipline, a license still active on the issue date, and the firm’s registration. Compare Utah with other states on who can seal drawings, by state.

Common mistakes

Where to file

SealBench never files anything with a board for you. Renewals, CE reports and firm registrations go to the board directly:

How SealBench helps

SealBench keeps every PE and architect license and every firm registration on your roster in one list, soonest expiration first. Reminders at 90, 60 and 30 days before each date are coming soon. It counts each person’s CE hours and required topics against Utah’s rules, and Set Check shows who can seal each sheet in a Utah permit set, and why anyone can’t. One license is free to track; see pricing.

Utah renewal questions

How often do PE licenses renew in Utah?

PE and SE licenses renew on a two-year cycle and expire March 31 of odd-numbered years. Check each engineer’s own date on the board’s license lookup.

How many PDH hours does a Utah PE need?

30 PDH every two years. Hours above 30 in a two-year period may carry forward, up to 15, into the next two-year period (R156-22-304(6)).

How many CE hours does a Utah architect need?

24 hours every two years, all of them in health, safety and welfare (HSW) topics. Two-year period ending December 31 of each odd-numbered year.

Does an engineering firm need a certificate of authorization in Utah?

Not from the engineering board, according to the data we hold. Utah issues no firm license or certificate of authorization for engineering. Business registration with the state is a separate question.

Does an architecture and engineering firm need one registration or two in Utah?

Utah has no firm registration for architecture. Architects and engineers are licensed under separate acts (58-3a and 58-22) with separate boards under DOPL.

Does SealBench file renewals with the Utah board?

No. SealBench tracks the dates, CE hours and firm registrations and shows what’s due next. Your firm renews, reports CE and files with the board itself.

Is any sheet in your next Utah set blocked?

Send one permit set and your roster. Within two business days we return who may seal each sheet, and why anyone is blocked: state license, discipline, expiry and the firm’s registration. Your first Set Check is free.
